Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Honolulu HI
949 AM HST Sun Feb 2 2025
.SYNOPSIS...
Overall, a dry north northeasterly wind pattern will persist
through the first half of the week. The second half of the week
may briefly get disrupted by a weak front but then a more typical
easterly trade wind pattern shall take over end of the week into
the weekend.
&&
.DISCUSSION...
Latest satellite imagery shows a weak high northwest of the state
that is driving breezy north northeast trade winds and a shallow
scattered cumulus cloud field over the state. CIMSS precipitable
water imagery shows mostly a dry airmass across the state, the
exception is around the Big Island where there is still some
lingering moisture. Morning soundings show inversion heights
around 4 kft for the western end of the state and near 7 kft
around Big Island, but should lower through the day as mid level
ridging generates more subsidence over the state. Due to limited
available moisture and stable airmass expect clouds to be limited
along exposed windward and mauka areas and only light rainfall if
any. Chances of rainfall should ease slightly this afternoon
around the Big Island as drier airmass continues to filter in.
A weak and shallow band of moisture assoicated with a remnant
front will move over the state Monday into Tuesday. Expect just a
slight increase in windward clouds and showers as winds remain in
a north northeast flow. North northeast winds will persist through
Tuesday as the high west of the state slowly tracks east.
Wednesday winds may weaken slightly and become more easterly as
the high tracks north of the state and weakens as a front
approaches from the northwest. Thursday into Friday, deterministic
guidance continues to shows a shortwave trough deepening the
upper level trough and another surface front moving through the
state during the second half of the week. The ECMWF is a little
more progressive at bringing the front through the state than the
GFS. Thus the exact timing is still uncertain at this time.
However, ensemble forecasts are not showing any significant
weather. A high pressure will build northeast of the state over
the weekend returning typical easterly trades in the wake of the
front.
&&
.AVIATION...
Northerly flow continues to support a stable and very dry airmass
over most of the island chain. The lone exception is windward Big
Island, where diminishing low level moisture will produce pockets
of MVFR conditions from Laupahoehoe northward today. Dry and
stable northeast winds will prevail tonight into Monday, with some
increase in shower activity possible around Kauai near sundown
tomorrow. No AIRMETs in effect.
&&
.MARINE...
Gentle to moderate north winds are expected to veer northeasterly
and strengthen slightly today as a weak high pressure northwest
of the state will slowly track eastward through the middle of the
week. Trade winds look to remain just under Small Craft Advisory
through the forecast period for the windier waters and channels
around Maui County and the Big Island.
A combo of a moderate to large medium period north-northeast swell
and a small, medium period northwest swell will continue to
produce moderate to large surf along north facing shores. The
north swell will gradually fill in this evening, peak tonight and
Monday before gradually declining through the middle of the week.
A High Surf Advisory (HSA) is possible during the peak of the
swell for north facing shores. Another small to moderate northwest
swell is also expected to fill Monday, and peak Tuesday before
declining through the end of next week.
Surf along east facing shores will remain small except for
shorelines exposed to the north- northeast swell through the first
half of the week. Surf along south facing shores will remain tiny
through the forecast period with mainly background energy.
